I am a US citizen, want to get married to my niece who is in India. Looking at marriage laws in US, it looks like such type of marriage is not legal. However it is allowed in southern India. My question is can I go to India and get married there and sponsor immigrant visa for her? Do the US marriage laws impede the proceedings?

If your intent is to marry your niece in India and then bring her back to the US as your wife, it will be close to impossible. Even though this type of marriage is considered legal in India, it's illegal in the US. Unfortunately, any form of marriage that is considered illegal in the US, most likely, won't be recognized by the government.
