  • When can a green card holder apply for citizenship

Hi All- My wife entered the US on a fiancee visa and then we got married and she got a temporary green card which got converted to a permanent green card later on. I see online that green card holders through marriage can apply for us citizenship after 3 years.

Does the 3 years start after she got her permanent green card? or does it start from the first temporary green card that she had got?

She got her first green card in March 2016 which expired in March 2018. Her new green card has the same date for the resident since, so she has already completed 3 years, so we can apply now right?

3 years from March 2016, and she can file up to 90 days early, so she could have applied for naturalization under the 3-year rule starting in Dec 2018.

This is my personal opinion and is not to be construed as legal advice.
