  • Affidavit of Support - Co-sponsor/signer

Since I am a student, my deficit for the required income is about 5k per year, but currently the only form I can find has to be between the sponsor and a household member - is there any form or leniency for a non-relative to become a co-sponsor?

Also, as for the household member, my mother makes all of her income through a trust fund and the tax forms are through her mother since she claims her as a dependent - I'm presuming she cannot file to be my co-sponsor since she doesn't work and hasn't filed taxes for this cause.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Another person can be a joint sponsor without living in your household. The person will fill out the same form I-864 or I-134 (as required for your visa and consulate.) You both provide the same form, each person showing their own proof of income and the joint sponsor ALSO showing proof they are legally in the US, either as a natural born citizen or naturalized or a green card holder.

Your mother does not sound like a good person to be the joint sponsor because the joint sponsor has to make the full amount to support his/her own family + the immigrant. I don't know how the grandmother can still be claiming a grown daughter (who has a grown child herself) as a dependent. And if your mother actually gets a regular income from a trust or otherwise, and it's more than around $9000 a year, she should be filing taxes. So her situation doesn't sound like someone who could be a joint sponsor.
