  • Adjustment of Status and Birth Certificate

My fiance and I were married October 2, and the wedding went very well.

Next is applying for the Adjustment of Status. The only snag I see right now is that a copy of her birth certificate is supposed to be submitted with that. They kept her original birth certificate at the airport when she arrived, and we didn't think about keeping a copy. It may not be possible for her relatives in the Philippines to get another one. Will that be a big problem? I am thinking of submitting the Adjustment of Status application, and saying something like "you guys already have the original birth certificate."

Why did they keep her birth certificate when she arrived and why would they have had it? I am the beneficiary and I have my original as sent to my consulate but they returned to me at interview. When we filed petition only sent a copy.

They kept ALL of her documents that were in the envelope the embassy sent her. The only thing she has is her vaccination record. When we applied for a Social Security number, the SSA seemed to think that was normal.

Now we learn her sister can get a copy of her birth certificate, scan it, and email it to us, so maybe everything will be okay.
