It customary to bring a photocopy of the BC to the interview so they can verify the original and put the photocopy in the file. Some consulates may do that copying even, but it's best practice to provide one so they don't keep the original. It is most likely in the file that will be turned in when he enters the US.
You can call them and asked if it can be retrieved. You can open the brown envelope that says "DO NOT OPEN", take out the BC and replace with a photocopy, then return the whole thing to the consulate for it to be re-sealed. Or order a new copy while he is still in his country from wherever such records are obtained.
