  • Veteran seeking help with the form I-864

So this is my first post here, and thanks in advance to anyone who can help me navigate this issue.

So let me start off by saying that I am a veteran who has been living off of my disability for some number of years. I am not unemployed, as I work in wildlife conservation and anti-poaching in Africa, yet I do not ask for money from the NGO I work for, as I have always preferred the money go towards helping people and saving animals rather than in my pocket, so I do my work pro bono. That said, as part of my job the organization flies me out to Africa for 3-4 months a year to work with anti-poaching teams and to help improve programs with the local tribes and stakeholders in the region. It is through this job that I met my fiancée who is a native of the country I operate out of.

Here-in lies the problem. Because I have been living off of my disability from the VA, I have not had a taxable income for more than a few years and as such have not had to file taxes as the report would simply say I've had zero income. I make enough money on disability to live quite comfortably and between that and my credit score in the low 800's I am able to live just fine. However, my research has shown that these items would not count towards proof of income on the I-864 towards getting my fiancée visa approved. Even were my income were to count I am about $2,000 short of the 125% poverty mark (despite the fact that I am able to save money every month) so if it were counted I would still fall short of the mark. I am wondering what my options are in order to make this work, because I make enough to be able to support her just fine, however the government disregards the money I pull in. I do have a savings and assets such as investments and such but they are not enough to make up the difference from what I've read/seen.

Everything else I have been able to figure out on my own, I was just wondering if anyone could offer up some advice on what I can do to make this work.

tl;dr - Have had tax exempt income for number of years, and need help proving that income on the I-864 form.

    Thanks in advance!
