  • K1 visa (social security number)

i arrived here as k1 visa holder. in two weeks of stay here, i was not able to apply for my social security number, because i'm not aware that it is possible only 14 days before I-94 expires. my questions are:

is it okay if i do it after i received EAD or employment authorization?
how long it will take to process SSNumber?

    thank you very much!!!!
    gobless bless you all

What are you saying? You didn't apply when you first arrived and now it's too close to expiration of yout I-94?

Yes,after EAD which is employment authorization.
Can get the number the day after you apply but about 10 days to get the card in the mail.

they told me that i should applied ssn before my 1-94 expires. which i failed to do. i read that i-94 expires 2weeks after you arrived in us. do you think i made a mistake of not filing SSN early or it is much better doing it after EAD card arrives? what do ya think? thank u nichole

Your I-94 has a date written on it. It doesn't expire for 90 days. Social Security won't give a K1 a SSN if it will expire in 2 weeks or less. So basically you have until Day 76 in the country to apply.

I wouldn't say it's "much better" to wait, but waiting isn't a huge mistake either. Having the SSN is good for opening a bank account. As soon as the EAD card arrives you are ready to work or go get a drivers license without having to go get a SSN first.

Sometimes your name is not found in the database SS uses and they have to send off for manual verification of your entry. That can take a month or more. In that case, by applying shortly after you entered the US it would have been sorted by the time you got EAD and going to work or driving wouldn't be delayed waiting on the SSN.
