Expiration and cancellation are two different words. When did the petition expire?
Stop using the word Visa cancellation anyway. What your employer did is withdraw their petition, not cancel your Visa. The cap-exemption is available for 6 years since the last time you held H1 status. Sometimes USCIS goes by the last petition expiry date, sometimes they go by the last date you were in the US in H1 status. If you find another job, let the new employer and their lawyer decide the course of action.
