H1B Visa Extension and Sabbatical

I have an unique situation which I need advise on.My H1B visa is up for extension in January,2014.However, I have a gotten a chance to do an European MBA from September 2013.I want to take a sabbatical from this company and do the MBA but I once I am done in one year would like to file for extension.Will it be possible?

Is it legally possible to file for an extension at later date?
