I-94 expiring but H1 Visa valid.. What are options?

My H1B visa is valid till 2015, but I-94 is valid till Oct 2013. If I change my current employer and if I get H1 transfer done, would I be getting new I-94 valid till 2015? Do I still have to go out of country and come back?

If the new employer's petition is filed before the I-94 expires, they can request extension of status as well and get it approved with a new I-94 (for 3 years).

If that is not possible, you must either have your current employer file an amendment or leave and return to get appropriate I-94. I am assuming the shorter I-94 is due to expiring passport and you have renewed your passport now.
