H4 Expired before applyingf or an extension

My dependants VISA is expiring on Oct 30th 2013, I just realized that my Son's passport has expired, so I have applied for a new passsport, I will most likely get the passport in hand by 25th of Oct 2013,My company can apply for the extension only after I get the new passport.

I would like to know what if I dont receive the passport on time ? How long can the dependants stay in the US after expiry of their H4 visa ?

When is the I94 expiring? Post that extension application will not be possible.

If you get passport by Oct 25th, good, do a efiling and you should be fine.

One should keep monitoring ones status and passport expiry dates every few months to avoid last moment hassles.
