H1 B extension question

Hi Team,

I am currently in USA on H1B visa. My visa(petition) is expiring on 11-Dec-2013. My I94 is expiring on 21-dec-2013. My employer has filed H1B extension for me. Petition is yet to be filed with USCIS. I am expecting my petition to be filed any moment. My question is

1) Is it mandatory that my petition should be filed before my petition expiry date ?

2) What will be happen if it is filed after 11-Dec and before 21-Dec, is it still valid scenario for H1B extension.

Surprising that your I-94 is expiring after your petition any idea why? Nonetheless, its the I-94 which governs your status so you should be fine as long as extension is filed before your I-94 expiry.
