  • Is it reqd to get a new passport with same place of issue as spouse for H4

    Hi,

I am getting married on 28th Jan and will be applying for a H4 Visa (my spouse in on a H1B now). I have two questions with regard to the process:

1.Is it ok to apply for a H4 visa with my maiden name? I am guessing the Marriage Certificate will have to be issued with my maiden name as well. Is this a common practise?

    2. My passport has Kolkata as 'Place of Issue' and my fiancee has Mumbai as the 'Place of Issue' for his passport. Will i have to get a new passport with Mumbai as the place of issue? Which city would i need to choose as my place of visa interview?

Please let me know of any other things one has to look out for to avoid a relatively hassle free H4 visa process.

Thanks in advance for your help.

    Regards..

-- Yes. In fact if you keep your maiden name for all future documentary purposes, that will save you a lot of hassle. But if you want to change the name, do it before applying for H4 Visa (Obtain new passport with new name).

    -- That does not matter.

    See above.
This is my opinion and not legal advice.
