Lost Job - Still in USA - LEGAL to work freelance from home in USA until expired?

Hey guys,

I got laid off from my job. I have the 30 day noticed before I need to leave the country. A studio contacted me for work, and aren't yet willing to sponsor a new Visa for me without trying me out.

I want to try working for them from home as freelance. Is that legal for me? I would leave the country just before my 30 days are up, and continue work from my home country from there.

Thoughts?
