Hi all!
I need some answers... I'm hoping someone here has dealt with this situation or can lead me in the right direction. It's been hard trying to research on Google. Anyway, to take you to the beginning...
I take taekwondo from two South Korean teachers. One's been here ten years, and the other about seven years. Last week I was told that one of the teachers wasn't able to renew his visa and was going to have to return to South Korea this month. Everyone is upset and would really like for him to stay! I sat down with him today to get some more info about the situation, hoping there was something we could do to help him stay!
He came here to the states sponsored by Bally Total Fitness with a H1 visa. He worked there for two years. He then transferred to another job, and they were supposed to renew the visa, or transfer it... Whatever they do when you switch jobs. Anyway, they didn't do it in time. My friend didn't find out about this right away and thought everything had been taken care of. Well, it hadn't and his visa expired. I'm not sure why he didn't take steps to look into it then... It's now been five years. His driver's license expires in January 2015, so he says he needs to leave before then. He's very paranoid being here illegally, and he says he'll be even more scared once his license expires. Is there ANYTHING at this point that he can do? Since he's been here illegally, can he even apply for a visa? Is a green card an option thru his employer?
I'm sad thinking of him having to leave. He's a great teacher, has many students, is very active at his church, has learned english, and is very much an asset to our society.
