Quick question regarding COS from H1-B to H4

Hi,

I applied for a change of Visa status from H1-B to H-4 on Aug 1,2014 and it got approved on Nov 5,2014. What was my visa status while the COS petition was pending? Am I considered to be on H1-B till Nov 5 in this case even though I applied for a COS on Aug 1? The reason I ask is because I have limited time (~1.5 years) left on my H1-B and want to save it for my next potential employer

Does anyone have knowledge of this? What happens to your status during the time a H1-B to H4 COS is processing? Technically I shouldn't be on H1 because I am not working and also not on H4 because it hasn't been approved yet- is that correct?

COS approval generally back date from the application date.
