Extending immigration stamp in passport (old passport expires in Feb 2015)

The immigration stamp on my passport has the expiry date of my passport as the valid to date although my visa is valid for a few more months after that. I will be applying for a re-issue of the passport - I was wondering how the immigration stamp could be extended until the end of validity of my H1-B visa once I get a new passport? Do I have to travel outside the US or can it be done without leaving the US?
