H1 - Unpaid leave for 6 months - what happens to visa status

Me and my husband are on H1 visa currently.

I need to take a break for 6 months. If i go on unpaid leave for 6 months, will my H1 visa stays valid without going out of status? If yes, what documents need to be submitted by my employer to the USCIS?

What is the best option for me to take a 6 months break and return to job?

It would make more sense to move to H4 and then move back from H4 to H1.
