Procedure to cancel H4 Extension

I applied for my wife H4 extension on September 2014, still the extension is not approved, meanwhile she has to travel to India to get her J1 visa approved(travelling to india is inevitable, as she has some more work in india), as she is going to start her residency this year, so in this case, whether the H4 visa extension will get void when she travels out of US or do we have to formally send a request to cancel the H4 visa extension before she applies for the J1 visa in india? if a request has to be sent to USCIS to cancel the extension, can someone please let me know the procedure?
