H1B query - Covering letter/resume

Hi,
I am going for H1B stamping at chennai consulate in Jan 2006 for the first time. I have prepared my latest resume. Do i need to prepare the covering letter?. Is it mandatory? Pl. clarify.

I saw in one of the discussion that covering letter should be printed in the Current company's letter head. Please help me with if you have any formats.
