F1 OPT to H4 with EAD COS

Hello I am currently on my OPT 17 month extension. My employer has filed H1B and approved and will start from Oct.
I am planning to however quit my job and apply for H4 with EAD. I understand that my H1B will cancelled by my employer.

If I apply for H4 with EAD while my COS is in progress, will the 4 month OPT unemployment period also start from the day i quit my job ?

If it takes more than 4 months to get my H4 will I go out of status ?

No. Once you file I-539 for COS to H4, you can stay in U.S and you will not go out of status (as of the date of the receipt notice). This period is called as "Period of authorized stay by the attorney general".
