Applying US DL while H1B Visa about to expire and petition for Visa Extension on.

Hi,

My H1B Visa/I-94 is about to expire on 30th of this month and My docs are under verification while my visa petition for extension would be filed in another week on premium mode.

Am hold Indian Driving License + IDP, I have been driving for about 10 years in India.

Can i apply for Driving License in New Jersey per state law and obtain driving license or should I wait until my visa extension is through?
