Applying SSN for H4 dependent

Hi,

Sorry if this question has been already answered in this forum and I couldn't find one.

My wife is on H4 (me on H1b) and she is trying to get into research work (volunteering). This research organization wants to do a background check on her for which they requested her SSN and she doesn't have one. As a general rule H4's cant apply for SSN and I am aware of this but wondering if there are sub clause which will let us apply for a SSN for my wife?

If any kindly let us know and it will greatly appreciated.

As per my knowledge H4 holder cannot apply for SSN unless they have an approved H4 EAD. Check the below link.
