H1B amendment (with spelling mistake in name) + extension

A query from my friend.

My H1B got expired on Sep 2015 . And I have already filed for amendment + extension in june 2015 currently my case status is in received since June 9 2015 .
But in later course I came to know that there was a spelling mistake in my last name while filing my case amendment . And now my employer says need to file a new amendment parallel for typo error. Also my passport is getting expired in June 2016 .
How do I need to proceed now ?

Cant apply for passport nor for US driving License till I receive a valid H1B document.
If 2 amendments in parallel almost for 7 months I need to wait for final approvals .

Can someone suggest how can I proceed in my current situation WRT passport renewal , name correction and valid H1B document
