H1B transfer and out of status

I am currently working with company A with H1b visa validity until Jan 1st 2016. I transferred my visa to company B and it got approved from Jan 2nd 2016.

If i resign from my company A the last date would be immediate. So i shall be out of status until Jan 2nd 2016. Is this fine? How many days can we be out of status?

It is advisable to maintain your status all the time. Out of status period of less than a week can be overlooked.
