Is H1 extension document needed for h1 stamping?

Hi All,

I have been working in USA since October 2008 on H1b visa. I had to abruptly return to India in July of 2015 due to parents health concerns.
My H1 visa was due for extension in October of 2015 but I could not file for h1 extension as I had to rush to India. My parents told me to return to US in Jan 2016 so I took it easy and I didn't bother about it

My greencard processing is in first stage. My lawyer told me that I could come and I all I need is a job offer and then apply for h1 extension. Once I get the h1 extension, I can then use that for h1 stamping in India.

I was wondering if there is a less painful way to return to US since I have been working in US on h1 for 7 years and my greencard processing is in first stage.
