H1-B Stamping After Visa Transfer

Hi,

I'm working here on H1-B visa and recently changed my job from company 'a' to company 'b'.
I currently have have visa stamped based on my previous employer's approval notice and is valid until Jaunary 2017.
I have a plan to visit India during December 2016 and do the restamping based on new employer's documents.

Can I use the drop box option to get my restmaping done ?
Or do I need to go to the cosulate (Chennai, in my case) in person and attend interview again, since the stamping is for the first time after I changed the job ?

what i have heard is one can not use drop box option once you have changed the employer but i am also looking for a concrete confirmation where one can travel back to US with previous valid visa on passport using new company's petition.

can someone point to the valid source of the information ? all i am hearing is, yes you can travel but no one seems to have or willing to share the source of the information.
