H1B to B2 transfer process after 6 years

Hi,

I am completing 6 years on H1B in Apr-2017 (already recaptured the time stayed outside of US) and we are expecting a baby during end of March 2017. We can not travel back immediately after the baby is born. I wanted to ask if I can change to B2, stay for 1-2 months and then travel back, when the baby is 3 months old. I can take off from work while staying on B2.

What is the process to change the status to B2 and when should I start the process. any other options?

Another option, expecting mother travels to her home country before her authorized stay expires, while she still can fly. She avoids any overstay.

We are looking to have baby here, only problem is that we need some more time before baby and my wife can fly back.

Curious if there's a particular reason to have the baby born in the US, if visa and finances are issues?
