can I hold multiple H1b's?

Hi All,

Last year through one of the consultant company I got my H1B sponsored. but I did not get the H1B visa stamped, because I got a 221(G) asking for client letter and my consultant company could not get me a client letter.
I told my consultant company to close my H1B application, the consultant company also has sent an request to the INS to cancel my H1B application. I have not recieved an acknowledgement from the INS stating that my H1B application is closed.

so Meanwhile, can I apply for a fresh H1B for this year (2006) through some other employer?

Also, I did not go back to the chennai consulate after I got the 221(g), as I did not get the client letter, will this cause problem for my new H1B application this year?
