H1B expiry and return travel

I will complete 6 years in my H1B on October 17th 2017. I am deciding on a date to travel back to India, just thinking if I should leave US before expiry, ( will that be of any use?) or utilize visa to the max and leave on 17th. My question is, If I come back next year in L1 Visa and if my company applies GC for me, after i140 is approved can I extend my current H1B if I have unused days? if that is possible, how many days before expiry should I leave US ?

Leaving sometime on your H1 is always a good idea. If you come back on L1, get an approved I140, and you have time left over on your H1, you can always switch back to H1 and get extensions until your PD becomes current.
