H1B to J2 visa transfer after H1B extension denial?

My I94 got expired on Nov-2017 and I recently received an RFE for my H1B extension. I'm asking this question just to be prepared,
My wife is in J1 visa, If for any reason my H1B extension got denied.

Q1: Can I apply for a J2 visa immediately or Will I be out of status the day I receive my denial notice and should leave the country immediately?

Q2: What are the other options in case of H1B denial when I94 is expired?
