H1b petition extension after the validity if candidate doesn't travel to usa yet

My h1b petition has validity date that gets complete by next month end. My H1b Visa stamping is made recently and it also has it
s validity till next month end (petition validity and visa validity dates are same).



Can my employer logs for petition extension even though i'm still in india and not travelled atleast once or is it required t hat I have to be in USA for sure for getting the petition extended first and then the visa extension ?
