Currently have H1b but want to take an assignment overseas assignment. Can I use H1b?

Hi all
I am currently on H1b visa with my PERM application filed (still waiting for approval). My company is expanding overseas and I am thinking of taking up the challenge. But I am weighing the odds of not liking the place and wanting to come back to the US. When I leave my job in the US to take up the role in a different country, do I lose my H1-B visa status and my PERM application? If I decide to come back, could I continue on the H1b?
