Visa date without I-797

I am traveling to India in December and want to get the H-1B visa stamped during my visit. I have not yet received the I-797 yet. Has anyone been in the same situation and made an appointment by just guessing the petition expiry date, i.e. 3 years from Oct 1?

No... cannot be done that way. You need to wait till you receive actual dates

yes ...u can do that...i did the same. i took the appointment before i received my I-797.

once u receive your I-797, u can modify the petition details.
