regarding ECNR entry in passport

Hi all
I am having doubt on ECNR entry of passport.
I got passort during my engineering, so ECNR entry is reflecting as ECNR required [as still I am studying at that time].

Now is it necessary to go to passport office to get the status as emmigration check not required symbol before attending the US consulate for visa interview.
Please guide me on that

---- The ECNR can be applied for at any time. Before going to the US Consulate for a Visa interview or after that.

---- The stamp of ECNR on the Passport is required by the Indian Govt. The US Govt. will have nothing to do with it
