Is it mandatory to land at employer's place?

My company is at Dallas, Texas, and i want to land at san francisco
(no problem with my employer) to stay with my relatives for few days
and then back to the employer place. My question here is, does this way is
acceptable for the H1B holders and also with inspection officers at my port of entry (i.e. San francisco)
