H1 Renewal - Passport Expiry in 2 Months

Hi,
My H1 is scheduled for renewal in May 08 and my passport expires in July 08. Do I need to renew my passport before I can stamp new H1. I am currently in US. Is it possible to get renew that passport before its expiry date?

Alternatively, can I hold the petition without stamping it in May 08 and continue to stay in US till I get my passport renewed in July and then stamp the visa in Canada/Mexico?
