  • Urgent Help : H1 Stamping - Sending Passport to India

    Hello,

I am a indian citizen living in the UK. I have an approved h1 petetion on my name. I went to stamping at chennai consulate in august 2007 when i was on a holiday in india. They had issued me a blue form stating that they will contact me back.
Now, i got a letter from US embassy in chennai asking me to submit the passport for stamping and my application would be expiring in one year.

The problem is now i am in UK and it is not possible for me to travel to india before august 2008 ( when my application expires as told in the letter from embassy ).

My question is can i send my passport for stamping from UK to India via post or any other person? Is it legal? If it is, should i take any authorized letter from indian high commision in UK?

Also, when they say that my application will expire in one year, is that the visa application or the h1 petetion? Can i go for a fresh visa interview on the same h1 petetion after august 2008 if i am not able to travel to india by that time?

    Please advice

    Thank you very much

---- Do not send your Passport via post or person. It will be deemed illegal and later can get you into trouble. Make some arrangement to go there personally, even if it is expensive. You will save a lot of questioning later in your life

Its unlawful to send indian passport across international borders via post or any other courier agency. Same rules might apply to other countries' passports too, but I am sure about Indian passports. Please appear personally.

One of my friend suggested me to contact DHL and when enquired, DHL in London and Mumbai told clearly that they are authorized to take indian passport across borders but need a authorization letter.

Also in the passport its written that "passport should not be sent by Post. It should either be with the holder or a person authorized by the holder".

        Any idea regd DHL thing?

Can you please confirm that DHL is authorised to carry indian passports across internantional borders if an authorization letter is supplied?
Do i have any other alternatives?

It does not matter what DHL policy is. As per the Consular General website,

It is written in ALL CAPS...

IT IS ILLEGAL TO SEND OUT YOUR PASSPORT OUT OF THE COUNTRY OF YOUR PRESENCE EITHER BY POST OR COURIER.

I am not a lawyer and you need to consult with one to validate any info posted on the forum and discuss your case specifics. H1b Question? Read the FAQ first.
