H1 B extension

Hi,
My H1 B visa is expiring on 14th march'08.My H1B extension application was filed with USCIS on 23rd Nov'08.Still I have not received the approval.It is with Vermont center.Can anyone suggest when can I expect approval of my case.
Also is it ok to travel just few days before expiration of current visa.In such case,can there be problem at Port of entry.I have the receipt number which my employer provided me.

---- It takes about 6 months, if your H1 extension application it is in normal processing. If you get it earlier you are lucky

---- It is not an issue to travel before the expiry of your Visa and return within the validity period of your Visa. However, at the POE you have to demonstrate your legal status to work in the US based on a H1 approval notice (I-797). A receipt is not a valid document by any means
