---- The SSN will not be valid.

---- Chances of getting a H1 is based on the lottery system and the credentials of your employer asn yourself

---- If you have a masters degree by being on F1 then you can apply in the masters quota. However, even that goes through a lottery system. Irrespective of your prior status at the time of application you have to go throught he lottery

---- Although your SSN is not valid when you are on H4, once you get a H1, the same SSN gets activated and will be valid after you report to the SSN office with your H1 approval notice

SSN once issued remains and same and remains the same. There is no thing called SSN being valid. Many immigrant SSNs have a condition listed " Valid with DHS authorization" or Valiid for employment with INS authorization" or the likes.

SSN can be used for employment only when your status allows it and it is explicitly authorized by USCIS. There is nothing that you need to do when your status changes at the SSA office.

Bottomline - SSN is valid for work only with DHS authorization to work for aliens. For all other purposes like DL, Bank etc, SSN remains valid all the time once issued.

          thanks so much

thank you so much friends. It has really helped me a lot. I have one more question if you could help. I have to get my PT license in the state of New jersy. I can receive it by jan 2009. the state board requires me to have a VALID SSN. I am little confussed that if by that time ig get converted to H4 I can still provide them my current SSN? kindly help.

          thanks a ton once again.

Like I said earlier, SSN can be provided and used anywhere necessary unless it is for employment and your status does not allow it.
