Passports status

Hi,
My wife and my daughter attended US consulate at Chennai on May 15th. The VO officer took the passports and said that it would take 1 andhalf week to get their passports back.
Still there are no signs of their passports and the passport tracking thro the VFS website says that the US consulate did not hand over the passports.
I called the VFS regional centers and they do not have a clue.

I am worried as why this is taking time and is there any bad thing going to happen.

If anyone had faced this kind of situation, please respond.

Probably PIMS verification. When was your H1b petition approved?

Should be getting the visa soon if they kept the passports. If the delay is going to be longer, they return the passports back.

What is PIMS?
My H1B got approved in June 2007 and it is valid until Feb 2010.
