H1 Renewal - when to apply

My 1st H1 expires Oct 2009. When should I request/initiate my company to send renewal papers? Someone mentioned 6 months prior to H1 expiration is this correct?

---- Yes, that is correct. It takes about 3-4 months under normal circumstancesfor the approval notice to come to your hand (or to the attorney). If it is Premium processing it takes 2-3 weeks

Thanks for the info. Am I correct in understanding that if its filed and in pending status, I can still stay even though my current visa date has expired.

---- Yes, you can continue staying witha limit of 240 days and this about 8 months and by that you should get the approval
