Waiting for SSN

Hi All,

I am on H1B Visa and applied for my SSN on Oct 1. I am still waiting for SSN to come. Does that mean I will be on H4 for all that period my SSN is being processed or in any case I have to work for my employer being on H1B status. Also my employer is not ready to give me the payslips until I get my SSN. Please advice.

You're doing good ...

... not currently having SSN does not change your visa status.

Once you get the SSN, let your employer know so they can enter it into the system and continue the taxing process.

You need to be paid from day 1 on a H1b status. No exceptions. Back pay, payment without SSN are possible for short periods. Good HR know what needs to be done.

Thanks a lot. Really appreciate it.

1) In other words, if I get my ssn on say 20th Nov, I still have to show taxes for Oct and Nov? I am currently not working as the employer first wants ssn. Or, would my taxes start from 20th Nov?
2) How soon can I safely change employers? Someone suggested 3 months but I have a much better job offer NOW and would prefer joining them, if legally okay.

You pay taxes for the wages earned and on H1b, you need to be paid from day 1. You pay taxes from Oct 1st.
