  • Issue with receiving SSN

    Hi,
It has been 5 months since I applied for SSN but have not received it yet. I am on H1 visa and I need to return to India in 5 days. Do I need to cancel the application when I go back? What happens if I dont cancel before going and I come back after few months?

What is your status? Why do you need to cancel the SSN?

My current project here is getting over and my company wants me to return to India for some time. My H1 status is valid until next year.

So you were working on H1b all these days and did not have a SSN? Did you go talk to SSA? You need not withdraw the SSN application.

I applied for SSN 15 days after my arrival here and have been following up with the SSN authorities constantly. They tell me they have not received a response from immigration and that is the reason for the delay.

I was planning on going to the immigration office when I came to know about my return to India. Even if I meet with immigration people, my SSN would not reach me before I leave to India. So I have dropped that plan.

Now that I have to return, what happens when I come back to the US after a few months?

You have to get a new I-94 when you return and apply for a SSN again. Hope that the record is in the system.

Do you have a long name which could have mismatched in the visa and I-94 causing this delay?
