Filing H1 transfer/extension

My H1 transfer to COMPANY B is in progress, i got the I797C and waiting for further status update. While this is in progress, is it legal for me to ask COMPANY A (who is holding my H1 right now) to file H1 extension also?. My H1 is expiring on May 2009.

Please reply for this.

Each petition is independent and unrelated. They can do whatever with it.
