i am pregnant due this year and am on H1B. I have some paid leave accrued. Can I take leave without pay on H1B? I thought we should be paid to be in status.

-- Yes, you can take "Leave without pay", you will not be out of status. Even if you are not getting paid you still are on company payroll. if a woman on H1-B is pregnant, she can surely take maternity leave without going H1B out of status. ask more to your employer attorney about maternity leave..

Just remember that in US, maternity leave is not for 2-3 months, usual culture is about 6 weeks. But still this is a valid reason.
