H1B Extension - Pls advice me

Hello,
My H1B visa is getting expire on 2nd May 2009. I have applied for extension through my consultancy when I was in US, after that my contract got ended in US and I came back to India and working for the same consultancy. When I am here my H1B extension request got RFE and my consultancy cancelled the extension request. Now I want to know, should I do my petition transfer before the visa expiration date (May 2nd)? I came to know from one of my friend that when I am in India I can do petition transfer/apply for extension whenever I want, there is no need to do it before its expiration date. Is it true? Since these days no consultancy is ready to do H1B transfers and I am also not much interested to go to US for a while. Please reply me with your suggestions/ advices.

The answers have to be comprehended and applied to your sitiuation. There is no direct answer. Read remainder option and apply that to your case. The term extension applies only when you are inside US. if you are out, your h1b can be renewed when you have a job and have not used all the 6 years earlier.
