RFE on H1B Extension ... worried about my status

I received an RFE on my 2nd H1B extension asking for client letter, SOW, contracts etc. While I am working on all these docs, I am worried about the worst case scenario.

My current h1b visa expires on 10/15/2009.But I have applied my H1B extension on 06/05/2009 thru premium processing.

So my main concern is what would happen if USCIS denied my extension? Would I be in status till 10/15/2009 based on my current H1B or does the denial affect the existing one?

Also what are my options at this point other than hoping for the best?
I am very anxious about the state of matters as my wife is into 7th month of her pregnancy and worried that my h1b visa coming in the way of her pregnancy.

You will be in status until the date of current I-94 and H1b petition.
