hi i am in the US right now with a n F1. and my H1-b status starts on october 1 2009.. when can i go to the social security office to get my ssn? can i go now? or wait till october 1? can i start working without a SSN on oct 1? because they said it will take 2-4 weeks to get the ssn.. pls advise.. thanks..

You can start working without SSN on October 1. You will need a valid I-94 on which you are eligible to work to apply for SSN among other documents. If your I-94 validity starts from Oct 1, then its recommended to apply on or after that date.
