B1 to H1

I read the faqs but this is still unanswered.

I have B1 (valid till 2018) and visited US in past on B1.
I have approved H1B (this year) but not visa stamped.(no job from employer)

I want to visit a US friend on B1 visa and then search new job/employer.
and then can I convert B1 to H1 while being in US(on B1).
or do I have to return to India.

---- Doing a COS from B1 to H1 is not recommended. It is better to return to india, get your H1 visa stamp and then return to US and start working
